Chapter 2 discusses the Teaching Methods that we have been going over in class recently. Since it relates, What method have you chosen and why? Also what method, or combination of methods do you think work best for your style of teaching.
For me, I chose the direct method and I am really excited to be able to attempt to teach you guys some Japanese words! Personally I think it is really intersting and fun way to get students interested in learning the language because even if they have no prior background, with visual ques, students are able to understand some basic vocabulary words. (which is really cool in my opinion) However, I don't believe this method should be used on its own, especially when students have no prior background in the target language. More complex words and grammar points cannot be learned through this method alone.

I chose the grammar translation method not because it's my desired style of teaching, but to learn more about how language was taught in history. Also known as the "classical method", this focuses on grammatical rules, memorization of vocabulary, text translation, and written exercises (sounds pretty boring :/). It's probably the most common form used in school today because it requires little preparation work on the teacher's end. I don't think this method is a total loss, just that maybe it should be used with other techniques or to reinforce learning. All students learn differently and it's our job as teachers to figure out which combination works best for that particular group.

I chose TPR, Total Physical Response as it is a method of teaching foreign languages especially in the beginners’ levels. This method aims at providing students with comprehensible input through certain gestures. Muscles have memory which can be backed up very easily. Once learners combine structure with movement, it becomes very easy for them to remember them. TPR believes that minds are wired to acquire languages but not necessary learn them and this was proven once every human being acquired his/her first language so, s/he can acquire a second one. Adults can acquire a language as children once they were taught it in the way children were taught as it isn’t a matter of age, it is a matter of teaching method. TPR never forces any learner to speak till s/he is ready to do so. S/he will be ready once s/he starts talking in the target language because s/he feels confident and has a lot of input enjoying low affective filter. TPR is very successful with academically weak students and even special education causes. It can take place in any kind of age groups or size classes.
but while teaching I will make a combination of all methods to make the best use of each and to meet all the students' different needs and intelligences.
