Which teaching strategy is more effective for ELL students, explicit or implicit? Do teachers tend to use explicit or implicit more? When would you use explicit vs implicit?

I'd have to say it's hard to choose which strategy is better for ELL students because it depends on what type of learners you have. The implicit strategy is where the teacher presents information and allows the student to draw their own conclusions. Most instructors use the explicit method to clearly outline students goals and objectives expected of them. Students who like structure and need directions laid out for them would benefit more from explicit and learners who use discovery to learn would like the implicit method better.

I agree with Maria that it depends what learns you have in your class and which strategy would be most effective to them. However, I believe that with ELL students student the explicit strategy will be more effective because with the explicit strategy clear goals are set and the teacher uses a form of teaching in which information connects to one another which I believe is more effective when learning a second language since the teacher will be more in charge of their learning she will direct it based on where the students are and will connect new information to prior knowledge. Their learning will be more meaningful and progressive instead of implicit learning, in which learning is without conscious attention or awareness. I also notice that teachers use explicit strategy more because they want more meaningful learning with clear objectives and goals in which they are working toward achieving. I think explicit strategy should be used when learning new and relevant information but implicit strategy can be used when reviewing information that you already know because you might not need as much attention or awareness when going over information that you know vs information that is new and you never heard before.

It depends but, I do believe that languages acquisition is more likely to be implicit learning. On the other hand, Languages learning is more likely to be explicit. Both of them form a continuum of possibilities and one should account for all the specifics of a given context before rendering a conclusion. They can to be applied together but with selection of the best time for each.
