According to the text, there is a different between mistakes and errors. Mistakes refer to a performance error that is either a random guess or a "slip," in that it is a failure to utilize a known system correctly. An error is a noticeable deviation from the adult grammar of a native speaker, reflects the competence of the learning. Errors arise from interlingual errors of interference form the native language, intralingual errors within the target language, the sociolinguistic context of communication, psycholinguistic or cognitive strategies.

A mistake can be made in first language as well as second. It is a slip of the tongue or true non-understanding of the rule in the first place. A mistake is usually self-corrected. Errors are a true wrong understanding of the language like putting SVO order in the wrong order for that language. The general errors learners make are addition, omission, substitutions, and ordering. Three sources are 1) interlingual errors of interference from first language, 2) intralingual errors within the target language, 3) and the socialinguistic context of communication.
